The author gives a great deal of detailed and informative background information about the Essenes of the time, and how their teachings contrasted--or were similar--to Jesus'. Although it greatly pre-dates the finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls, it's fascinating to note ho|About the Author|Edward Planta Nesbit (d. 1900) was a schoolmaster, author and land agent in Angaston, South Australia, during the 19th century.
This was supposed to be a first in a series titled Christ, Christians and Christianity, but no more books were ever published. In the book, Nesbit makes a very radical proposal which hinges on Jesus being a member of the Essene sect, today known as the custodians of the famous 'Dead Sea Scrolls.' There were no chapter breaks in this book, so rather than present it in one long chapter, I arbitrarily split it into 5 chapters.
